Since 2019 when we officially began, we've had very few participants who didn't get to ride, and that was only because they were too heavy for the horses to safely carry. But for everyone else, we find a way.
We have two independent saddles and two different lifts that help us take people out of their wheelchairs and put them on the back of a horse. These lifts have been game changers for us. I've watched kids who've been in wheelchairs their whole lives get lifted up onto a horse for the first time. I've seen their parents cry. I've seen veterans who thought they'd never ride again get back in the saddle.
We think everybody should be able to have that experience. It doesn't matter what your challenges are or what equipment you need. If you want to be on a horse, we're going to do everything we can to make it happen. That's just how we do things here.
Some families come to us thinking it won't be possible for their child. They've been told no so many times that they expect it. But we've invested in this equipment specifically so we can say yes. Because that moment when someone goes from their wheelchair onto a horse, when they feel that movement underneath them and realize they're actually riding... that's what this whole thing is about.
We don't turn people away because of physical limitations. We figure it out. That's our job.
